Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)
The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is an opportunity for the high school student to complete a high school diploma while also working as an indentured apprentice, earning credits. They build hours towards a Journeyman’s Certificate in one of Alberta’s more than fifty trades. Worksites are approved and a teacher supervises the student’s experience.

Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is an opportunity for high school students to earn up to 40 credits towards their high school diploma while also building hours towards their first year apprenticeship in one of Alberta’s more than 50 trades.
What is apprenticeship?
Apprenticeship is a form of post-secondary training designed to prepare people to work in one of the 50+ trades in Alberta. An apprentice spends 80% of his/her time at a job, working for wages, under a qualified journeyman. The rest of the time (about 8 weeks per year) apprentices take technical training at a technical college such as SAIT. An apprenticeship program lasts 1 to 4 years, depending on the trade, and a student graduates with a Journeyman Certificate.
How does RAP work? RAP students divide their time between an approved work site and their high school. At school, they take regular courses, such as English, Social Studies, Science and Mathematics in order to earn their Alberta High School Diploma or Certificate of Achievement. At their worksite, they are indentured apprentices who can earn as many as 1000 hours towards their Journeyman’s Certificate. For every 25 hours as an apprentice, they also receive one high school credit, up to a maximum of 40.
The time a RAP student spends at school and on the work site can be quite flexible. The student school and employer jointly agree to a suitable schedule. The student might work as a RAP apprentice for a semester, for half of each school day, or during summers, holidays and weekends.
RAP students are expected to continue their apprenticeship after they graduate from high school. The RAP apprentices’ technical training is delayed until they have completed both high school and the required number of hours of workplace learning.
Summer Career Discovery Program
The Summer Career Discovery Program provides students the opportunity to gain real-life experience in an unpaid 2 week long (75 hour) position in a worksite during the summer break. The Calgary Catholic School District will be actively persuing opportunities in the following areas: Law, Engineering, Veterinary Medicine, IT (Information Technology/ computers) and Architecture.
The Career Discovery program provides grade 10 or 11 students in our district the opportunity to explore or research a particular career field at a worksite. See your Off-Campus teacher or Career Practitioner to register.
Career Internship - Work Experience
Students with definite Career Pathway goals may set up a personalized career internship; approved on an individual basis. This means if students find their own summer job within their career pathway, they may be able to earn high school credits for that job.
